    Frequently Asked Questions

Do the boards need to be painted?

No, the boards don't need to be sanded, varnished or painted.

    Can they be painted?

The coloured boards have already been painted using a paint-and-bake method which gives the boards increased durability and strength. Boards can either be painted an alternative colour (if you are doing this, we recommend purchasing the unpainted Board) and can be touched up if necessary.

If I want to paint the boards myself, what paint do you recommend using?

We recommend using an acrylic-based paint for external use (you should be able to find a suitable paint at your local DIY store).

    How are the boards made?

The cement is made with clay, iron and limestone, creating the foundation of the Boards. Sand is then added for resilience and weather-resistant properties. The cellulose fibres make up the interior composition for increased strength and integrity. Lastly, water activates the ingredients and binds them together, with additives and chemicals.

    Are these boards weather-resistant?

Fibre Cement’s chemically-bonded additives provide long-lasting weather resistance and durability that will retain its colour and continue to look impressive all year round, for many years to come

How much overlap should be left for each board?

    Up to 30mm.

How many square metres does each board cover?

    0.65 square metres.

    Can they be cut?

Yes, but please only use a wet saw and wear a Level P3 Respirator. Do not cut them inside.

How should I lay the battens?

Install the 50mm x 38mm timber battens with the 50mm area flush to the wall, creating a 38mm ventilation gap between the wall and the fibre cement cladding boards.

    What screws do I need?

Fix the boards to the starter trim and battens behind with a 38mm screw. Screws should always be inserted at the top of the board into the structural battens. There must be a 20mm clearance gap between the edge of the board and each 38mm screw. Please contact info@tradewarehouse.co.uk if you have any questions.

How do I maintain the cladding boards?

Ensure your boards are kept clear of debris and dirt by cleaning them with lukewarm or cold water. A mild, household dish soap can be added for more stubborn stains such as bird droppings. Mildew and algae should not grow on the cement boards, thanks to their rot and weatherproof properties. Ensure the Boards are kept clean of dirt, pollution and other stains by checking them annually and giving them a quick clean when necessary.

What are wall end trims used for?

These trims are installed on the finishing edges to conceal exposed ends of fibre cement wall cladding boards.

What is the perforated closure used for?

It is installed under the battens at the base of the build or at the top of any doors and windows to ensure ventilation throughout the installation. A perforated closure protects the build from any dirt or animals entering the airflow space.

Can the boards be installed vertically?

    No, they cannot.

Can I use a pressure washer on the fibre cement boards?

Pressure washers are not recommended to be used on the boards as the pressure could strip the Boards of their paint layers and properties. Simply clean using lukewarm or cold water and light detergent with a cloth or soft brush
