Choosing the right aluminium canopy for your entrance
There is quite a difference between a simple canopy over a front door and a larger architectural entrance canopy with lighting, side panels and concealed drainage. The right choice really comes down to three things: how wide the entrance is, how much projection you want, and how exposed the doorway is to the weather.

So rather than choosing on appearance alone, it is worth thinking about what you actually need the canopy to do.
Roof-only canopy or a canopy with side panels?
For a fairly sheltered doorway, a roof-only canopy is often all you need. It gives useful cover while keeping the entrance clean and open, and works particularly well with contemporary doors where you do not want to add too much visual weight.
If your entrance regularly catches wind-driven rain, adding a side panel can make a noticeable difference. It gives protection on the exposed side of the doorway and can also make a larger entrance feel more complete.

The position of the side panel matters too. Before ordering, stand outside the entrance when the weather is poor and look at where the rain normally comes from. That sounds obvious, but it is a much better way to decide between a left- or right-hand panel than simply choosing whichever looks better in a photograph.
Width matters, but don't forget projection
Most people start by looking at canopy width. That's sensible, but projection is just as important.
A canopy around 1600mm wide can work nicely above a standard single entrance, while 2000mm and 2500mm models give more coverage around wider doors, glazing or side lights. We also offer selected designs around 3 metres wide for larger domestic and commercial entrances.
Projection tells you how far the canopy actually comes out from the building.
A 900mm projection gives useful everyday cover without making the structure feel too dominant. Deeper models, including selected designs around 1250mm, create a much larger sheltered area and can make more sense where the doorway is particularly exposed.
Before buying, measure the wall as well as the door itself. Check for:
- Downpipes and external pipework
- Lights, cameras and doorbells
- Windows close to the entrance
- Fascia, soffits or low rooflines
- Steps and handrails
- The direction the door opens
- Available fixing space around the canopy
A few minutes measuring properly can save a lot of hassle later.
From simple door cover to architectural entrance canopy
One reason the aluminium canopy market can be confusing is that products described by the same name can be very different.
At the simpler end, some door canopies use an aluminium support structure combined with acrylic or polycarbonate glazing. At the other end are formed architectural aluminium canopies with features such as insulated roof sections, support posts, side panels, built-in lighting and dedicated rainwater drainage.
Neither type is automatically right or wrong. They simply suit different projects.
For a small rear door or straightforward entrance, a simple canopy may be plenty. For a contemporary front elevation, apartment entrance or wider architectural doorway, a more substantial aluminium structure usually looks more in keeping.
Aluminium canopies with integrated lighting
Built-in lighting is one of those features that feels optional until you have it.
Several canopies in this collection include integrated LED strip lights or spotlights, allowing the entrance to be illuminated without fitting a completely separate light above or alongside the structure.
It works particularly well on dark anthracite or black canopies, where the lighting becomes part of the architecture rather than looking like an extra fitting added afterwards.
If you regularly arrive home after dark, or the entrance sits away from street lighting, it is a genuinely useful upgrade rather than just a design feature.
Post-supported canopies and larger entrances
Once canopy width and projection increase, support posts can become part of the design.
These models have a more substantial architectural appearance and are particularly well suited to wider entrances, commercial properties and homes where you want the canopy to become a feature of the front elevation.
Selected post-supported designs also incorporate rainwater drainage within the structure, which avoids having an obvious external downpipe hanging from the front of the canopy.
Again, check the individual product specification because drainage arrangements differ between models.
Modern, traditional or something a bit different?
Not every aluminium canopy has to look like a plain rectangular box.
Flat architectural canopies
These are probably the easiest designs to pair with modern windows and doors. Clean lines and anthracite finishes work particularly well on rendered properties, extensions and newer homes.
Hipped aluminium canopies
A hipped roof gives the canopy a slightly more traditional profile while keeping the low-maintenance aluminium construction. This can be a good middle ground where a completely flat canopy feels too modern for the property.
Brise Soleil and 3D-Line designs
Our Brise Soleil aluminium canopies are more architectural again. Rather than creating a heavy solid roof, the projecting blades become part of the appearance of the entrance.
These suit contemporary homes particularly well and make much more of a design statement than a standard door hood.
Timber-Line aluminium canopies
Timber-Line designs combine an aluminium structure with timber detailing. They are useful if you like the clean form of aluminium but want to soften it slightly with natural material.
This can work especially well alongside timber doors, timber-effect cladding or properties where a completely metal entrance would feel a little too stark.
Anthracite, black or a custom RAL colour?
RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey remains popular for a good reason. It pairs naturally with modern aluminium windows, composite doors, bifolds and contemporary roofline products.
Black works particularly well where window frames, doors or exterior lighting already use darker finishes.
Selected aluminium canopies can also be produced in alternative RAL colours. This is useful on architectural projects where the canopy needs to match windows, curtain walling, cladding or another specified element of the building.
Custom colours and bespoke sizes normally carry a longer lead time than stocked models, so check the individual product information before ordering. If you have a particular RAL reference or non-standard size in mind, speak to us before placing the order.
What about bespoke aluminium canopies?
Sometimes a standard 1600mm, 2000mm or 2500mm canopy simply does not fit the elevation.
Selected systems within the range can be supplied in bespoke dimensions or finishes, making them suitable for larger residential entrances, commercial developments and architectural projects where a standard off-the-shelf canopy would look undersized.
If you are working from drawings, send them over. It is much easier to check the width, projection, side-panel position and finish before manufacture than try to make the wrong canopy work once it arrives.

Are aluminium canopies suitable for front doors?
Yes. Aluminium works particularly well for front entrances because it can create a relatively slim, clean structure while still providing useful shelter. The right width, projection and style will depend on the doorway and how exposed it is.
What size aluminium door canopy should I choose?
Start with the overall width of the entrance rather than just the door leaf. Allow for side lights, frames and the amount of cover you want on either side. Then consider projection — a deeper canopy provides more shelter, but also takes up more space in front of the building.
Do I need a side panel?
Not always. A roof-only canopy is usually enough for a sheltered entrance. If rain regularly blows across the doorway from one side, a side panel can provide much better protection.
Can aluminium canopies include lighting?
Yes. Several models in our range have integrated LED strip lights or spotlights. Check the individual canopy specification because the lighting arrangement differs between designs.
How does rainwater drain from an aluminium canopy?
It depends on the model. Some use a simple outlet or water spout, while others have integrated drainage through a side panel or support post. The product page will explain the drainage arrangement for the canopy you are considering.
Can I order a canopy in a custom colour?
Selected models can be supplied in alternative RAL colours. Bespoke colours generally have a longer lead time than stocked anthracite or black options.
Are custom sizes available?
Yes, selected architectural canopy systems can be manufactured in non-standard dimensions. Availability depends on the model, so contact Trade Warehouse with the dimensions or drawings for the entrance if you need something outside the listed sizes.
Are all aluminium canopies constructed in the same way?
No. Some use an aluminium framework combined with a glazed or plastic roof panel, while more substantial architectural models use formed aluminium roof structures and can include insulation, drainage, posts, lighting and side panels. Check the individual product specification rather than comparing products on width and price alone.
