The Novia 1000 VCL is a medium-specification vapour control layer designed to manage water vapour and maintain airtightness in timber frame constructions. Manufactured from blown virgin polythene, it offers a balance between the lighter 500G and heavier 1200G membranes, providing reliable protection against moisture buildup. This VCL is fully CPR-compliant and CE-approved, ensuring its suitability for a wide range of building applications.
Vapour control layers are essential for preventing condensation, which can cause long-term structural damage and increase heating and cooling costs. Even a small amount of moisture within insulation can significantly reduce its effectiveness, making a high-quality VCL a crucial part of any building envelope.

In addition to vapour control, this membrane acts as an air-leakage barrier, reducing unwanted convection flows that contribute to energy loss. To ensure a fully sealed system, it should be installed using Novia's butyl and foil sealing tapes, which help maintain the integrity of the vapour barrier throughout its lifespan.
For optimal installation, Novia recommends using double-sided butyl tape with an overlap of 75mm to 100mm, or larger if required. A lap seal should then be applied using Novia foil tape for added strength. Wider tapes provide stronger seals, making them a preferred choice for high-performance applications. To further enhance airtightness, pre-applying butyl tape to timber studs at fixing points is advised before securing the membrane with staples or other fasteners.
