Cast Iron Beaded Half Round Guttering

Beaded half round is one of the more traditional cast iron gutter profiles. It has the familiar curved half round shape, but with a pronounced bead running along both outer lips. It’s a small detail, though visually it makes quite a difference.

The profile works especially well on Victorian properties, older cottages, listed buildings and restoration projects. It’s particularly common across Scotland and the North of England too. Alumasc describes its Apex version as a true sand-cast product, with the bead adding definition along the gutter edge.

If you’re replacing an existing system, matching the old profile is usually the sensible route. A different shape may still carry the rainwater perfectly well, but it can stand out once fitted beside original cast iron.

Beaded Half Round vs Plain Half Round Cast Iron Guttering

The difference is mainly in the edge detail.

Plain half round has a simple curved channel with a clean outer lip. Beaded half round adds the raised bead along the edge, giving it a slightly heavier and more decorative appearance.

Neither profile is automatically “better”. For a modern extension or simple roofline, plain half round can work very nicely. On an older building with decorative eaves, stonework or traditional detailing, beaded half round often sits more naturally.

If you’re replacing original guttering, have a close look at the outer edge before ordering. From ground level, plain and beaded profiles can appear quite similar.

4.5 Inch or 5 Inch Beaded Half Round Guttering?

We stock beaded half round cast iron guttering in 4.5" and 5" sizes.

The Alumasc Apex Heritage technical dimensions list these as 113mm and 125mm nominal sizes. Both gutter lengths are 1830mm long, or roughly 6ft. The 4.5" gutter weighs around 11kg per length and the 5" version around 12.5kg, so proper support during fitting really does matter.

Which one you need will depend on roof area, rainwater flow and, on replacement jobs, the size already fitted.

The 4.5" range has matching 2.5" and 3" outlet options. The 5" system gives you a wider choice across the range, including larger outlet sizes on selected fittings.

If you’re replacing an old system, don’t order from the gutter width alone. Check the outlet and downpipe diameter too.

Primed or Pre-Painted Black?

Both finishes use the same cast iron underneath. The difference is what happens after installation.

Primed cast iron is supplied ready for its final paint system on site. It’s a good option if you need to match an existing colour or your project specification calls for a particular finish.

Pre-painted black arrives with the finish already applied, so there’s less work once it reaches site. Black is still the most common choice for traditional cast iron rainwater systems and works on a huge range of older properties.

Primed components shouldn’t be treated as permanently finished products. Apply the proper finishing coats after fitting, paying attention to joints, cut areas and any marks picked up during installation.

What Parts Do I Need for a Complete System?

A basic gutter run usually starts with the 6ft gutter lengths, followed by fascia or rafter brackets, union connectors, stop ends and an outlet.

Corners need the matching angles. The current range includes 90°, 120° and 135° options across selected sizes, which is handy on older buildings where rooflines aren’t always a simple rectangle.

From the outlet down, you’ll normally need cast iron downpipes, bends or offsets, pipe brackets and a shoe or drainage connection. Cast iron hoppers can be added where several roof outlets or pipes need to discharge into one downpipe.

For smaller bits such as jointing materials and fixings, use the cast iron sundries section.

Installing Beaded Half Round Cast Iron Guttering

Cast iron is heavy, so setting out the supports properly comes first.

Our current fitting guidance gives a maximum bracket spacing of 915mm. Support should sit closer around outlets and corners where the weight is concentrated.

Each socket joint needs a small amount of movement rather than being rammed tight. The fitting guidance calls for around a 3–4mm expansion gap at the socket connection. Joints are sealed using the specified jointing material and secured with the correct nuts, bolts and washers.

Gutter lengths are supplied with M6 × 25mm nut, bolt and washer packs on the relevant products.

Take your time with the first few brackets. A small error at one end becomes much more obvious after several heavy cast iron lengths have gone up.

Painted sections need careful handling too. Chips picked up during fitting should be dealt with rather than left exposed.

Is Beaded Half Round Suitable for Listed Buildings?

It can be a very good choice for listed and conservation properties, particularly where the existing building already uses a similar cast iron profile.

Beaded half round has a properly traditional appearance and has been used on British buildings for a long time. The sand-cast finish and raised bead suit older architecture far better than many modern plastic profiles.

Still, listed buildings can have project-specific requirements. Matching the original profile, dimensions and finish may form part of the conservation approach, so check any restrictions tied to the property before replacing historic rainwater goods.

How Long Does Beaded Half Round Cast Iron Guttering Last?

Cast iron can stay in service for many decades with proper care. Its biggest strength is how repairable it is.

A scratched coating doesn’t mean an entire system needs replacing. Individual areas can be cleaned and repainted, joints can be renewed, and damaged lengths or fittings can be swapped separately.

The finish does need checking from time to time though. Keep the gutter clear, deal with exposed iron early and inspect joints during normal roof maintenance.

There are still plenty of old properties around Britain carrying cast iron rainwater goods many decades after installation. With this material, maintenance matters more than chasing one headline lifespan number.

Can I replace one damaged beaded half round gutter length?

Yes, provided the replacement profile and size match the existing system. Measure the gutter carefully first, including its width, depth and socket arrangement. Photos help too.

Can I use plain half round fittings with beaded half round guttering?

We wouldn’t mix the profiles unless the manufacturer confirms a particular fitting is shared. Beaded half round has its own gutter geometry and matching components, so using the correct range avoids awkward joints or poor alignment.

Do I need fascia brackets?

Not necessarily. Fascia brackets work where a suitable fascia is present, but the range includes top-fix and side-fix rafter brackets, plus rise-and-fall options for other roof details.

Can I paint primed cast iron any colour?

Primed cast iron can receive a suitable exterior metal paint system, which gives you far more freedom over the final colour. Follow the coating manufacturer’s preparation and application instructions rather than painting straight over dirt or installation marks.
