Description
James Hardie HardiePlank EPDM Tape is a UV-resistant protective gasket tape designed for use behind vertical joints within Hardie® fibre cement cladding systems. Installed directly onto timber battens, the tape helps provide additional weather protection at board joints, trims, window reveals and door openings where moisture exposure is highest.
This is an important installation component used throughout professional HardiePlank cladding systems to help protect the timber support structure behind the facade while maintaining a cleaner, more durable rainscreen installation.
Unlike standard membrane tapes, Hardie EPDM Tape is specifically designed for exposed cavity applications behind fibre cement weatherboards and remains stable in long-term external conditions.
What HardiePlank EPDM Tape Is Used For
-
Protecting vertical board joints
Installed behind butt joints where two HardiePlank boards meet on the same batten. -
Protecting timber battens from moisture exposure
Helps shield the timber support structure behind exposed cladding joints. -
Used behind trims and reveal details
Commonly installed around:- window reveals,
- door openings,
- corner trims,
- stop ends,
- and exposed board edges.
-
Supports open-joint cladding systems
Essential where visible open joints are designed into the facade system. -
Improves long-term weather resistance
Helps manage wind-driven rain and moisture penetration behind the cladding.
How Hardie EPDM Tape Is Installed
-
Fixed directly onto timber battens
The tape is applied vertically over the face of the timber battens before the cladding boards are installed.
-
Installed behind board joints
When two HardiePlank boards butt together, a short section of EPDM tape is positioned centrally behind the joint to protect the timber beneath.
-
Not self-adhesive
This tape must be mechanically fixed into place using staples or pins before the cladding is fitted.
-
Should not remain visible after installation
The installation guide notes that the EPDM tape should not oversail below the bottom edge of the weatherboard where it can be seen.
-
Used full-length behind trims and reveals
The Hardie installation guide specifies full-length EPDM application behind Hardie® NT3® trims, around windows and doors, and where boards are installed on edge into reveal details.
-
Can be stapled at regular centres
For full-length applications, the guide recommends fixing with heavy-duty staples approximately every 400mm.

An Important Detail in a Proper Cladding System
While often hidden once the facade is complete, EPDM tape plays a major role in protecting the structure behind the cladding. For installers and contractors, it is one of those small but essential components that helps deliver a more reliable, weather-resistant and longer-lasting HardiePlank installation.
