Description
James Hardie Hardie® Plank Lap Vented Starter Profile is a purpose-designed aluminium base trim used to correctly start horizontal HardiePlank cladding installations. Fitted at the bottom of the cladding system, this profile performs two critical jobs at the same time - it creates the correct starter angle for the first board and maintains the airflow required behind the façade.
Without a proper starter profile, the first plank can sit flat against the wall instead of matching the projection of the overlapping boards above, leaving the bottom courses uneven and visually inconsistent. This vented profile solves that problem by giving the first board the correct “kick-out” so the entire elevation stays straight, level and uniform from the ground up.
At the same time, the perforated ventilation detail helps maintain the continuous airflow cavity required behind fibre cement cladding systems, supporting drainage and helping prevent trapped moisture.
What This Starter Profile Actually Does
-
Supports the first HardiePlank board correctly
Creates the correct projection angle for the first plank so it aligns perfectly with the overlapping boards above.
-
Maintains ventilation behind the cladding
The perforated profile allows airflow into the cavity behind the boards while helping prevent insects and pests from entering the façade system.
-
Forms part of the ventilated rainscreen system
HardiePlank cladding requires a ventilated cavity behind the boards for long-term performance. The installation guide specifies a minimum 20mm airflow cavity along with ventilation gaps at the base and roofline.
-
Helps improve drainage and moisture control
Encourages airflow behind the cladding to assist drying and water management within the system.
-
Provides cleaner, more accurate installations
Gives installers a straight, repeatable starting line for the entire cladding run.
How the HardiePlank Starter Profile Is Installed
-
Installed horizontally at the base of the wall
The profile is fixed level along the bottom of the vertical timber battens before any cladding boards are fitted.
-
Acts as both a starter strip and ventilation trim
This combined design removes the need for separate packers or timber starter strips in many installations.
-
Positions the first board correctly
The installation guide explains that the starter profile creates the required “kick-out” detail for the first plank to match the lap angle of the cladding above.
-
Maintains the airflow path behind the facade
Proper ventilation at the base of the system is essential. The guide states that anything blocking airflow behind the cladding can prevent the system from functioning correctly.
-
Matched to batten depth
Profiles are available in 25mm, 38mm and 50mm depths to suit different batten systems and cavity requirements.
-
Creates the required drip edge
When installed correctly, the system helps form the recommended drip detail at the lower edge of the first board. The Hardie guide specifies a minimum 10mm drip edge on the first installed plank.
Why Installers Use Vented Starter Profiles

A Small Trim That Makes a Big Difference
Although often overlooked, the starter profile is one of the most important components in a fibre cement cladding installation. It sets the line for the full façade, supports correct board alignment, and ensures the ventilation cavity can function properly from day one. For installers, developers and cladding contractors, it delivers a cleaner finish, quicker installation and a more reliable long-term cladding system.
