The James Hardie HardiePlank VL Starter Profile is the purpose-made base support used when installing HardiePlank VL Click / interlocking fibre cement cladding horizontally.
Installed along the bottom of the façade before the first VL board is fitted, the starter profile creates a straight, secure starting point for the cladding and supports the lower edge of the first course.
What is the HardiePlank VL Starter Profile used for?
HardiePlank VL uses a tongue-and-groove interlocking system, so it needs to begin from a accurately positioned and level base.
The VL Starter Profile is fixed along the bottom of the vertical battens and the first HardiePlank VL board sits directly onto the profile. Once the first board is correctly positioned, the subsequent boards interlock above it.
Getting this first course level is particularly important, as it determines the alignment of the rest of the façade.
How is it installed?
For a horizontal HardiePlank VL installation, James Hardie uses two separate components at the base of the wall:
1. Ventilation Profile
The perforated ventilation profile is installed first. This allows air to enter the ventilated cavity behind the cladding while helping to prevent pests and debris entering the cavity.
2. HardiePlank VL Starter Profile
The VL Starter Profile is then fixed level with the bottom edge of the battens.
The first HardiePlank VL board is positioned onto this starter profile before being mechanically fixed through its concealed fixing area.
When correctly installed, the starter profile positions the first board to provide a 10mm drip edge at the bottom of the cladding.
Important – the Starter Profile and Ventilation Profile are different products
The HardiePlank VL Starter Profile does not replace the ventilation profile.
For horizontal VL installation, James Hardie's system uses the starter profile in conjunction with the appropriate Hardie ventilation profile.
The ventilation profile manages airflow into the cavity, while the VL Starter Profile provides the physical support and positioning for the first cladding board.

This particular VL Starter Profile is for horizontal HardiePlank VL installations.
If the HardiePlank VL boards are being fitted vertically, James Hardie uses the separate HardiePlank VL Window Head & Vertical Starter Trim as the base starter detail.
Always select the starter profile to suit the orientation of the VL boards being installed.
Compatibility
This starter profile is designed specifically for James Hardie HardiePlank VL and should not be confused with the HardiePlank Lap Starter Ventilation Profile used with traditional overlapping 8mm HardiePlank weatherboards.
It should also not be substituted with starter profiles designed for other manufacturers' click-cladding systems.
