Designed specifically for the HardiePlank VL Click / interlocking fibre cement cladding system, this 3m colour-matched profile is used along the vertical sides of window reveals. It forms the finished edge where the main HardiePlank VL façade meets the cladding used to line the window reveal.
What is the HardiePlank VL Window Reveal Trim used for?
When HardiePlank VL is installed horizontally, the cladding boards on the main wall have to terminate neatly at each side of a window opening.
James Hardie's window detail uses a piece of HardiePlank VL turned on edge to line the inside of the window reveal. The Window Reveal Trim is fitted at the outside corner of this detail, creating a neat transition between:
the horizontal VL cladding across the face of the wall → the Window Reveal Trim → the VL board lining the window reveal.
This means the cut ends and junction between the two cladding surfaces are neatly concealed rather than being left as an exposed fibre cement edge.
Where does the trim go?
The Window Reveal Trim runs vertically down the left and right sides of the window opening.
It sits at the outer edge of the reveal – essentially the corner where the front face of the clad wall turns back towards the window frame.
The result is a straight, colour-matched border around the vertical edges of the window while allowing the window reveal itself to be finished in HardiePlank VL.
How is the window reveal finished?
In the James Hardie VL window detail:
- The main HardiePlank VL boards are installed across the façade and cut to finish at the window opening.
- A section of HardiePlank VL is cut to the required reveal depth and installed on edge to line the reveal back towards the window frame.
- The HardiePlank VL Window Reveal Trim forms the finished vertical corner between the façade boards and the reveal lining.
- The trim/reveal detail is mechanically secured using the appropriate Hardie fixing, with suitable adhesive also used as shown in the James Hardie installation detail.
This creates a much cleaner finish than attempting to butt two exposed cut fibre cement edges together.

The Window Reveal Trim is for the vertical sides of the window opening only.
Different HardiePlank VL profiles are used for the other parts of the window detail:
Above the window: use the HardiePlank VL Window Head & Vertical Starter Trim, together with the required ventilation detail.
Below the window sill: James Hardie's horizontal VL installation detail uses the HardiePlank VL J Profile, while maintaining the required ventilation gap beneath the sill.
This is important because HardiePlank VL is installed as a ventilated rainscreen system, so the head and sill details must allow the required airflow behind the cladding rather than simply being sealed closed.
