James Hardie HardieSeal Edge Coating is a specialist acrylic-based touch-up and sealing paint designed specifically for use with Hardie® Plank and Hardie® VL Plank fibre cement cladding systems.
Whenever HardiePlank boards are cut on site, the exposed edges must be properly sealed before installation.
This edge coating is designed to protect those freshly cut areas while helping maintain the appearance and long-term performance of the cladding system.
Available in colour-matched options across the full HardiePlank colour range, HardieSeal Edge Coating helps disguise exposed cut edges, small chips, scratches and visible fixing heads for a cleaner, more professional finished installation.
What HardieSeal Edge Coating Is Used For

Sealing cut board edges
Used on all freshly cut edges of Hardie® fibre cement boards before installation to protect exposed material.

Helps maintain the long-term durability and weather resistance of the cladding system.

Touching up minor installation marks
Can be used sparingly on small scratches, chips and exposed fixing heads where required.

Why Edge Sealing Matters
Fibre cement cladding is designed for long-term exterior performance, but whenever boards are cut on site, the exposed edges should always be sealed correctly.
The James Hardie installation guide specifically states that all on-site cuts to Hardie® Plank weatherboards must be sealed with Hardie™ Seal Edge Coating prior to installation.
Proper sealing helps:
- protect exposed board edges,
- maintain moisture resistance,
- improve the finished appearance,
- and support the long-term durability of the installation.
Skipping this stage can leave exposed cut edges visible and unfinished, particularly on darker cladding colours or detailed reveal work.
How HardieSeal Edge Coating Is Applied
- Apply directly to freshly cut board edges before installation.
- Use a small paint pad, sponge or fine brush for controlled application.
- Wipe away any excess immediately from the face of the board.
- Use sparingly on visible fixing heads, scratches or chips only where needed.
- Do not apply broadly across the face of the cladding boards.
The installation guide also notes that the coating should only be used on affected areas, as excessive application across the finished face may become visible.
Important Colour Information

- Designed to provide the closest possible match to factory-finished boards.
- Exact colour matches cannot be fully guaranteed.
This is because the original HardiePlank finish is factory applied and baked during manufacturing, creating a finish that cannot be identically replicated on-site.
In practice, the coating blends extremely well for edge sealing and small repairs, but slight tonal differences may be visible under certain lighting conditions or on larger repaired areas.
