Victorian Ogee vs Moulded Ogee Cast Iron Guttering

These two profiles get confused quite often.

Victorian Ogee has a flatter, more open shape across the gutter. Moulded Ogee has a deeper, more pronounced front moulding, giving it a heavier decorative appearance.

Neither option is automatically the better one. Existing architecture normally makes the decision easier.

Victorian Ogee tends to work nicely on properties with slimmer decorative roof details. Cast iron moulded ogee guttering has more visual weight, so it often suits larger period homes and buildings with heavier mouldings around the eaves.

For replacement work, matching what’s already on the property is usually preferable to changing profile halfway around the building.

4.5" or 5" Victorian Ogee Guttering?

Our Victorian Ogee cast iron guttering comes in 4.5" and 5" sizes, with 6ft gutter lengths available across the range. Your current collection contains both sizes in primed and pre-painted black finishes.

The 4.5" system suits plenty of traditional residential installations. The 5" profile gives a larger gutter section and can make more sense where a greater roof area feeds the run.

Gutter size alone doesn’t tell the full story though. Downpipe diameter, outlet size, number of outlets and roof area each affect how the system drains.

The 4.5" range includes running and drop-end outlets for 2.5" and 3" downpipes. Matching larger combinations are available elsewhere across the Victorian Ogee system.

If you’re replacing an existing gutter, measure it rather than relying on how large it seems from ground level. Half an inch isn’t much to the eye, but it matters once you start joining cast iron components.

What Parts Do I Need for a Victorian Ogee Gutter System?

For a simple straight run you’ll normally need gutter lengths, brackets, union connectors, stop ends and at least one outlet.

Things become slightly more involved once the roof turns corners. The Victorian Ogee range includes internal and external angles in 90°, 120° and 135° configurations, which is handy on older properties with less straightforward rooflines.

From the outlet down, use matching cast iron downpipes, bends or offsets, pipe brackets and a shoe or drainage connection.

A cast iron hopper can be useful where several rainwater sources need to feed into one downpipe, such as upper roofs, balconies or adjoining roof sections.

Try to keep parts within the same gutter system. Two Victorian-style products from different manufacturers can have slightly different socket shapes or dimensions, despite seeming almost identical in a photo.

If you’re pricing a full house, send us a rough sketch. It doesn’t need to be technical. Mark the straight runs, corners and planned downpipe positions and we can help check the main components.

How Is Victorian Ogee Cast Iron Guttering Installed?

Cast iron is heavy, so bracket positioning matters more than it does with a plastic system.

For the Victorian Ogee range we supply, fascia brackets should be fitted at maximum 915mm centres. Extra brackets are needed close to joints, outlets and angles, positioned within 300mm of these points. Top-fix, side-fix and rise-and-fall rafter brackets are available where fascia fixing isn’t appropriate.

Leave around 3–4mm inside each socket joint rather than pushing the sections hard together. This gives the cast iron a small amount of movement as temperatures change.

Relevant gutter lengths come with an M6 x 25mm nut, bolt and washer for the joint. Direct-fixed arrangements use M5 x 25mm stainless countersunk screws at the specified fixing positions.

Take your time setting the first brackets. Six-foot cast iron lengths are not something you want to keep taking down to correct a poor fall later.

Primed or Pre-Painted Black?

Primed cast iron is useful where you plan to apply a particular final colour on site. It arrives with a protective transit primer, but this isn’t intended to become the permanent exterior finish.

Pre-painted black comes with the finished coating already applied. It costs more, but saves quite a bit of painting once the guttering is fitted.

For a standard black system, pre-painted is often the simpler choice. Primed makes more sense on restoration work where the rainwater goods need to match an existing paint colour.

Bespoke RAL and BS colours can be available on request for some projects too.

Replacing Original Victorian Ogee Guttering

Old cast iron is worth measuring carefully before ordering replacements.

Take photos of the gutter end, socket, outlet and brackets. Then record:

  • gutter width
  • gutter depth
  • length of each run
  • downpipe diameter
  • outlet positions
  • internal and external corners
  • bracket type

Don’t assume an old decorative gutter is Victorian Ogee simply from seeing it at ground level. Beaded half round cast iron guttering has a clearly different curved section, and Moulded Ogee has a deeper decorative front.

If only one part has failed, you may not need to replace the whole system either. Send us the photos first and we can help work out the closest match.

Looking After Cast Iron Victorian Ogee Gutters

Cast iron can stay in service for decades, but the painted finish does need a bit of attention from time to time.

Keep leaves and debris away from outlets and check joints during normal roof maintenance. Small chips in the paint are easier to sort early, before exposed iron starts corroding.

Your current product guidance recommends washing painted finishes at least once every 12 months, or around every six months in coastal and industrial environments. Decorative coatings may need repainting around every 8–10 years depending on exposure and condition.

One of cast iron’s nice features is repairability. A tired bracket, joint or gutter length can often be dealt with separately, rather than ripping out the whole rainwater system.
