Zinc Guttering FAQs

  • What’s the difference between natural zinc and quartz zinc guttering?
Natural zinc starts bright and gradually weathers to a soft grey over time. Quartz zinc is pre-weathered, so it arrives with that darker, aged look straight away. Performance-wise, both last decades — the choice is mainly about appearance and whether you want a uniform finish from day one.
  • Does zinc guttering need painting or treating?
No. That’s one of the main reasons people choose it. Zinc naturally forms a protective patina, so there’s no need for paint, coatings, or ongoing treatments. It looks after itself.
  • How long does zinc guttering last compared to plastic?
Zinc guttering typically lasts several decades with minimal maintenance. Plastic systems often need replacing after 10–15 years. Over time, zinc usually works out better value, even if the upfront cost is higher.
  • Is zinc guttering suitable for the UK climate?
Very much so. Zinc performs well in heavy rain, cold weather, and UV exposure. It doesn’t become brittle in winter or warp in summer, which is where many plastic systems struggle.
  • Will moss and algae build up in zinc gutters?
Far less than you’d expect. Zinc naturally inhibits moss and algae growth, which helps keep gutters clearer for longer and reduces how often they need cleaning.
  • Can zinc guttering be installed on timber buildings?
Yes, provided the timber has a pH below 5. Zinc guttering is compatible with spruce, oak, chestnut, red cedar, Douglas fir and similar woods, which makes it a popular choice for both modern and the more traditional builds.
  • Is zinc guttering hard to install?
Not especially. The system uses 3m gutter lengths, which makes alignment and fixing simpler, and brackets are spaced at 915mm centres. As with any metal system, accuracy matters — but it’s very manageable with the right preparation.
  • Can I mix zinc guttering with other metals?
It’s best not to. Zinc should be installed as a complete system to avoid potential reactions with dissimilar metals. Keeping everything zinc ensures longevity and avoids future issues.
  • How quickly can you deliver zinc guttering?
Both our natural zinc and quartz zinc systems are available on next working day delivery when ordered before 11:30am, subject to stock. That’s a big advantage if you’re working to a tight schedule.
  • Can you help me work out quantities before I order?
Yes. We can help with take-offs to make sure you order the right components and avoid over- or under-buying. We can also send a next-day sample box anywhere in the UK if you want to see the finishes before committing.
