Frequently Asked Questions – Shiplap Timber Cladding

1. What is shiplap timber cladding?

Shiplap timber cladding is a type of exterior and interior timber board with a rebated, overlapping profile.

Each cladding board slightly overlaps the next, creating a tight seal that helps shed rainwater and protect the wall while giving a clean, layered timber finish.

2. How is shiplap different from tongue and groove cladding?

Shiplap overlaps at the edges, which makes it very effective at directing water away. Tongue and groove boards lock together edge-to-edge instead, creating a tighter flat joint. Shiplap generally gives a slightly more traditional look with visible shadow lines.

3. Is shiplap cladding weatherproof?

Shiplap is highly weather-resistant when installed correctly. Its overlapping design helps prevent rain penetration, and when combined with breathable membranes and battens, it provides excellent protection against wind and moisture.

4. Can shiplap cladding be used outdoors?

Yes, it is most commonly used for outdoor projects such as garden rooms, sheds, workshops, extensions and full house façades. It can also be used indoors for feature walls and decorative finishes.

5. Which timber types are available in your shiplap range?

Our shiplap range is available in a wide choice of timbers, including:

This allows you to choose the right balance between durability, appearance and budget.

6. Does shiplap cladding need to be treated?

It doesn’t have to be treated, but treatment is recommended if you want to maintain the original colour for longer.

Untreated boards will naturally weather to a soft silver-grey over time.

7. Can shiplap cladding be installed vertically or horizontally?

Yes. Shiplap boards can be installed either vertically or horizontally depending on the look you want to achieve.

Both methods perform well as long as the structure behind is correctly prepared.

8. How long does shiplap timber cladding last?

Lifespan depends on the timber species and installation, but most properly installed shiplap cladding can last 20–40 years or more! Premium timbers like Accoya or Iroko can last even longer with minimal maintenance.

9. Is British-made shiplap cladding available?

Yes. We supply British larch shiplap cladding that is grown in the UK and precision-machined in Devon. This ensures consistent quality, accurate profiles and reduces environmental impact compared to imported alternatives.

10. How do I work out how much shiplap cladding I need?

Measure the total wall area in square metres, then calculate the effective coverage of each board after allowing for overlap. It’s best to add an extra 10–15% for cuts and wastage.

11. What fixings should be used for shiplap cladding?

We recommend stainless steel screws or nails, especially for cedar and hardwood boards, to prevent staining and improve long-term corrosion resistance outdoors.

12. Is shiplap cladding suitable for modern buildings?

Yes. While shiplap has a classic look, it’s widely used on modern homes and architectural projects due to its clean lines and neat shadow gaps.

13. Does shiplap cladding require a membrane behind it?

Yes. For best performance, install shiplap cladding over a breathable membrane and treated battens. This allows airflow and drainage, greatly improving durability.

14. Can I install shiplap cladding myself?

Yes. Shiplap is considered one of the easiest cladding profiles to install. It’s suitable for both professional tradespeople and confident DIY users using standard tools.
